Ht. of Mt. Everest Measurement

Background

After the devastating mega earthquake in April 25, 2015, the height of Mt. Everest is the subject of interest not only for the expedition, scientist and researcher but also for the whole world. In this context, Nepal has to measure Mt. Everest and disseminate its recent height to the world for its national pride. In line with this issue Survey Department has prepared a methodology to measure Mt. Everest’s height. The methodology developed by the Survey Department includes different surveying technologies. The methods includes early traditional as well at new technologies. As it is known that the technology is developing rapidly new and advanced technology are being introduced in the field of Surveying and Mapping. Since the measurement of the height of places which is not easily accessible is challenging task, new, advanced, sophisticated and easily adoptable technology needs to be adopted. In this matter, GNSS is advancing rapidly. Thus, along with the early traditional technologies, these modern technologies are also to be adopted. The workshop will focus on these issues and finalize the methods.

Objectives

1. To share the international experience on the height measurement of Mt. Everest
2. To share the international experience on height measurement of mountains
3. To explore and discuss the use of GNSS in height measurement of Mt. Everest
4. To validate the methodology of height measurement of Mt. Everest developed by Survey Department, Government of Nepal
5. To identify the challenges in height measurement of Mt. Everest
